I was just wondering, what is the difference between having a LEAF box and just going out and buying a hardware router for fifty bucks.

Difference ? performance.

With Bering you can, by a careful hw selection,
easily obtain a 10Mb/s + router/firewall.
The fifty-bucks-things are limited to 2 Mb/s; someone
reach full ADLS throughput (but the price soar too).

Example: here in Italy we have a ISP that sells, in metro areas,
Internet connection with Ethernet fiber optic links
that are able to do 8Mb/s+ sustained rate:
Bering on Pentium platform can handle this connections,
fifty-bucks-things no.
