To be able to boot without video card, using a serial port as the console, make sure you did the following: change /etc/inittab make sure that #1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty1 #2:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty2 is commented out (as Eric said). make sure that T0:23:respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttyS0 19200 vt100 is not commented out (make a note of the speed - 19200 here - since you'll need to have the same in syslinux.cfg as well as in the serial-port settings on your client) change syslinux.cfg comment out #display syslinux.dpy change default linux initrd=initrd.lrp ... to default linux console=ttyS0,19200 initrd=initrd.lrp ... (all the above assumes the console should run on your first serial port - replace ttyS0 with ttyS1 in all examples above if you want to run it on the second serial port). Basically, you should try to get your system to boot just with a serial console first. If you want to experiment later on how to configure everything in a way that it will also support a video-card if present, that's ok - but I wouldn't try to do everything at once.
