On my system, the /usr/sbin/mail script seems to work. (The SMTP server rejects 
the connection, but that's a different problem.)

Did you replace /bin/sh?

On my system line 6 is
qt () { "$@" >/dev/null 2>&1 ; }

If your shell does not like the function name "qt" you could try to replace all 
occurrences of "qt" in /usr/sbin/mail with something else, e.g. "qtxyz".
