At least, kernel *without any drivers* should start and print some info like CPU/RAM/memory regions/etc. Of course, if it has COM1 (/dev/ttyS0) as master TTY port, and if it has drivers for this TTY controller. If this board has incompatible TTY port or it has ttyS1/ttyS2/etc - you should integrate driver into kernel not as module or, in 2nd case, modify syslinux.cfg
