I don't think it's an issue with Soekris 4801, because I ran into the same pb with an Alix box (using the ancient pxe boot utility). Using a boot partition with 512MB solved issue - and 512MB on a CF was about ten times the space I needed to install all packages, therefor I didn't investigate further.
