YES! Although I thought I had re-typed the eth0 stanza, doing it again has cleared the problem. _AND_ I have found it! An extra space after "address 192.168.142.1 ". I use 'vi' and on all my 'normal' machines, I have set it so that it highlights whitespace at end-of-line. This, of course, does not apply to the editor in LEAF, not even in 'VI' mode :=) . ifup, ifdown and a box reboot all preserve the correct IP now. I can now re-load all packages and reconfigure the box as a FW inside the Fritz Box. Many, many thanks Erich, KP & Bodo (especially for your patience). Bob p.s Bodo tx for your PM, I am actually English (despite having a Prussian name), but am quite happy in English or German. Just that I stay with En for the list.
