YES!

Although I thought I had re-typed the eth0 stanza, doing it again has 
cleared the problem.

_AND_ I have found it! An extra space after "address 192.168.142.1 ".

I use 'vi' and on all my 'normal' machines, I have set it so that it 
highlights whitespace at end-of-line. This, of course, does not apply to 
the editor in LEAF, not even in 'VI' mode :=) .

ifup, ifdown and a box reboot all preserve the correct IP now.
I can now re-load all packages and reconfigure the box as a FW inside 
the Fritz Box.

p.s Bodo tx for your PM, I am actually English (despite having a
