I agree that spending money on a player doesn't necessarily mean that he'll be better than a free signing, but if you're prepared to spend on players then you have a bigger range of players to pick from and you'll increase your chances of getting a player that will improve your team. And as for Ipswich being bankrolled by a multi-millionaire, well Bates is a multimillionaire too!
