shankly had the opposite view of Johnny Giles then - in his book he said he 
could not understand why players applauded the fans - the fans had come to 
watch him not the other way round, and compared it to Frank Sinatra 
Must admit when I read it as a youngster it put me off him a bit - we all know 
the majority of players do not care about fans but please leave us with the 
illusion

but the interesting thing was Shankly’s supposed take on the idea of the fans 
thanking him, thanking the players …he apparently always took the line that it 
should be that way round it should be "the club” in its broadest sense that 
should thank the fans at every turn for making it such an honour to represent 
them, and by extension represent the city, and that the 
players/directors/managers etc should never forget that debt. We could do with 
a bit of that sentiment from someone, and I think they would get the patience 
and the crowd needed to do a proper job at Leeds.
