Just do a search for *.mp4 on your hard drive to find the actual files. You can then just specify that folder as the itunes music folder within the itunes software/settings. It should re-list them almost instantly. I suspect that for some reason your itunes reset the music folder destination.

Typically this is My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music. In ITunes look under Edit/Preferences/Advanced. If the files are on your disk then you will be able to get them back into ITunes. Before you do anything else back them up. If not then you will have a tougher job.
