Paul, HMRC are to blame because they instigated the trigger action of issuing a winding up order.
Doesnt matter why, that is the reason. But anyway.. Bates has said that he asked for a payment holiday. Are you saying he didnt? HMRC refused. Are you saying they didnt? The whole thing may have been a Bates master plan, but it seems that HMRC were willing to lose a large chunk of the money owed (by any reasonable expectations) in order to force football to sort itself out - Betty's words, not mine. So HMRC had bigger fish to fry and as a result a little sprat got away to live another day. Deal with it. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Paul Cundell Sent: 14 June 2007 23:29 To: 'leedslist' Subject: Re: [LU] The inevitible does happen Mark H wrote:- > I say HMRC are to blame, whether they had no option or not, > as soon as they > issued the winding up order Bates had his get out of jail > free card and > played it, as I would have. > Am I wrong in thinking that it was Bates who decided not to pay HMRC the agreed amounts then? Did he explore every possible avenue before opting to default? For instance, did he ask the players to defer their wages so that he could make the payments? If not why not? Did he ask Astor to lend him another £1M (since they didn't care about £18M another £1M would have made no difference)? If not why not?
