Luisa,
My apologies for a unpleasant e-mail it was a tad rude.
I will try to answer your questions as follows.
1) When the peace treaty was signed following the War of Independence
Northern Ireland was a big issue (subsequently leading to the Civil War) it
was partly dealt with by the setting up of The boundary Commission the main
aim of which was to reduce the size of the counties in the North to a level
that was not economically viable and thereby force the remaining parts of
the North into the South (this obviously never happened)
The IRA post the civil War pretty much disappeared occasionally rearing its
ugly head but unhappily it raised its head again in the sixties when the
Civil Rights movement started up in the North.
The authorities stamped down hard on this movement (NI was a State that if
you were a Catholic you would have been treated like the Blacks in South
Africa )
all hell breaks lose the British Army came in initially treated like heroes
by the Catholics then bloody Sunday kicks of and the IRA really gets
started-All of which could have been prevented.
In the South the vast majority of the population had no interest in the
North and if it could have been cut off and shipped away people would have
been very happy.
I don't know what referendum you are talking about their was one aprox 10
years ago but this was in respect of the setting up of the assembly in the
North and I cannot recall anything in that regarding reunification.
In the South the IRA were a proscribed organisation with non jury courts
used to try any one suspected of membership Sein Fein or any republican
organisation were banned from radio/television
Please also note that the political aims of the IRA was to have an all
Ireland Marxist state (they also considered themselves as the lawful army
and therefore considered the Irish police force the legitimate arm and the
whole of the Irish state as its enemy)
I cannot answer for people in the North I have only been there 3 times in my
life(all before the peace process) and always felt very uncomfortable their
but in the South we did a lot to try to stamp out the IRA but with a very
open border it is very easy to sneak in and out
Regards,
Edmond
