Well sometimes I hate to be proved right !
I posted a bit ago that we may miss Douglas when he was injured, I said Kishi
is finished, that Hughes is not a left back, That Richardson has really hit a
bad patch, that Kandol has not scored for ages and was short on confidence, and
that Heath was a liability against certain types of player.
OK, none of the above is rocket science or contentious and does not even
show any awarness or understanding on my part, however yesterday all those
factors came together and we ended up getting hammered.
Wise knows we need a left back, partly because Hughes is dodgy there to say
the least , and partly because we need his drive and energy in midfield and so
a left back has got to be our number one priority in the transfer window.
Someone asked if it was losing Gus \ gaining Bassett that has caused this
"blip" - in my opinion it was losing Clapham and not gaining Parker or another
left back that is the number one cause ! So at least that is a problem that is
being addressed if paper \ net rumours are to be believed (Fox perhaps? ) I am
a bit surprised we have not tried Huntington at left back since he did play
there a couple of times for Newcastle.
Fraser is having an awful time and must be replaced either by Gardner \
Madden or by a new player. Kishi (and De Vries) can be sent back and we need to
get another midfield player in or play Hughes \ Prutton as the 'running,
energy, tackling,' midfielder.
In some ways Saturday has been on the cards for a while, all Oldham did which
other teams have failed to do against us is take their chances - Hartlepool \
Marcus Stewart etc.
We were well beaten and it was sad to hear the team being booed at half time
because despite the performance and result they did try - both the players and
the management - to rectfy the situation. We also need to sort out defending
from corners - 2 free headers from 2 ordinary corners resulting in 2 goals in 2
games !
Two other points
1. This kicking it out when a player is injured malarky, when is it going to
stop and who decides how the game is re-started? Yesterday one of theirs went
down and their man kicked the ball out, at the re-start uncontested 'bounce-up'
we gave the ball back to them.
Later Kandol went down, both teams played on then the ref blew up - the
bounce up was a proper fought over one.
Then their keeper takes a tumble (after fouling Flo for what should have been
a pen !) - we play on then ref blows up - this bounce up is uncontested with
their player deliberatley kicking it into touch for a throw to us - what is
that all about ?
2. Standing \ stewards. I am only referring to Revie Stand here - but
yesterday the atmosphere was dreadful , the stewards got all the front of Kop
sat down then started on where we were and got half the upper sat down almost
silent (Fergiescum should have been at ER !!) When we scored straight after
half time and put them under pressure there was a real buzz and roar around the
Kop and even for a short time the belief that we could get a draw but this
groundswell was soon silenced by the stewards again getting heavy handed ! I
got a warning for accusing stewards of being Oldham fans and not wanting us to
win and saying that the team and Wise want us to get behind the team as
evidenced by the fact that Wise, Thommo, Casper, and Westlake in that very
programme gave it the old "crowd worth a goal start \ crowd give us a real
lift" spiele.
I have not seen anyone injured at ER since we became all seater despite the
fact that we are "persistent standers" so why is someone not fighting our
corner and saying to H&S people \ licensing committee that it is safe to stand
in the seated areas ? I am sure fans of Kaiser Cheifs will be standing and
dancing without incident at ER come May !!
I accept fans should sit down in Family Stand so kids can see, and in East \
West Stands where the more elderly \ sedate sit but the Kop is for 'lads' -
take away the atmosphere and football loses a lot. I know the old days will
never return but for things to be so sterile is just ridiculous -
Rant Over
