Yes I completely agree that the West Brom game cost us two league titles. I
also agree that the 75 team had peaked but surely that was the point. I
think that winning that year and maybe going on to take the world club title
would have allowed many of the squad to bow out at the VERY TOP. The club
could have rebuilt a squad from a position of massive strength. I don't
recall the next years European cup as being anything of a classic so we may
well have been able to get to the final again the next year. St Etienne did
it and I don't remember them pulling up any trees and YES they should have
won the Hampden final against Bayern. I was there for that one as well.
Strangely, the Glasgow crowd were solidly anti- Bayern. They were singing
allez les Vert in broad Glaswegian all the way through the first half but
their French accent was so bad (much like my own) that St Etienne had no
idea that they were all singing for them. Somebody explained it to them at
half time and you could see the difference when they came out for the second
half. you had to laugh really. Ironic considering our final was in Paris and
a French club reaching the final was unheard of back then. (or is my memory
playing tricks. Nurse, nurse.......
