Unfortunately, we will never know. I agree with all you say about what could
have happened. As I say, I was/am more angry about Tinkler, though - perhaps
because I was younger, but I still feel this had the biggest influence on the
history of Leeds United. Unfortunately, the 'fans' did not do our case any good
on either occasion, as the cause of the trouble in each case was quickly
forgotten, and only the 'Leeds hooligans' are remembered now. In 76 I was
working in Watford and remember lots of St Etienne fans stopping off on their
way to Hampden - indeed, there were one or two in the pub watching it! You are
not quite correct in saying a French club in the final was unheard of, as the
