It was a great day yesterday, starting with the pre-match entertainment, watching the last five minutes and injury time of Scum - Pompey with a couple of hundred others on the screens under the Kop. Every Pompey tackle, every mis-hit Scum shot was cheered to the roof, accompanied by jeers and cat-calls every time Ferguson's sour face appeared on screen. Magic. Then the game didn't let us down. I don't want to get too carried away here, Bournemouth were absolutely shite, but there was so much to admire about yesterday's performance. The mid-field was superb, with Prutton the pick. What a revelation he's been since being moved into the centre. The main thing yesterday though was the fluidity of the four of them, interchanging postions, covering for each other, helping each other out and passing the ball about delightfully for most of the time. Really good to watch. The defence did struggle at times, particularly in the second half, and as Bournemouth defended much better in the second half we wondered if the wind was more troublesome at the Gelderd End than it was in front of the Kop. The first goal was comical with their keeper coming out to punch and laying out a defender instead of punching the ball which ran loose as Johnson and Kandol followed it in, Johnson getting the final touch. The second was a great team goal with an interchange of five or six passes creating the space for Kilkenny to side foot the ball into the corner of the net from eighteen yards. Not hit with great power but the placement was superb. Job done, bring on Cheltenham.
Ankergen - dodgy with a couple of crosses, but a couple of excellent saves to make up for it 7 Kenton - good solid perfomance 8 Marques - a couple of dodgy moments in the wind, otherwise OK 7 Michalik - Not the player he was last season by any means. Time for Huntington? 6 Richardson - like the curates egg, good in parts. Had a couple of really good, tricky runs at the Bournemouth defence and with it opening up and Kandol and Beckford making great runs into the spaces he ran head down into tacklers instead of making the killer pass and was then caught out of position. A perfect illustration of David Prutton's post Crewe comments! 6 Kilkenny - good classy performance, great goal 8 Howson - this kid has great vision and good anticipation but is sometimes let down by the odd careless pass 7 Prutton - my man of the match. Here there and everywhere, breaking down Bournemouth attacks, starting our attacks, always there in space when a colleague needed someone to pass to. Made some great runs that weren't always picked out by the man with the ball 9 Johnson - is really starting to look like the player we were promised he was. Good engine, gets box to box, usually used the ball well 8 Kandol - played well I thought, won lots in the air, laid the ball off well when in possession, should have scored with a free header in the first half though. 7 Beckford - not as good as he has been sometimes. Tries to be too clever on occasions when the simple thing would be better. Like him though 7 Freedman - the camera can lie, he wasn't as fat as he looked in the photograph and was quite lively. One brilliant dummy on the edge of the area almost let Beckford in on goal.
