like mosts things there's good and bad but generally most
  Wetherspoons are okay.
true they're part of a chain but not a formulac (sp?) as
chains like the slug and lettuce (which i don't like).

i have visited a multide of wetherspoons and 90% have
been fine. beer in good condition, usually a good choice,
staff often helpful and will let you try before buy, food okay
even if not something to write home about and regularly
  good min-beer festivals.

yes, i have seen some alco, or vergin on types, but never
seen them being a problem. if they are they get put out.
rarely have i seen "Barry McGuigan-esque moustachioed
chavs" and anyway you get them most places.

okay, it's not your littler snuggly tucked away corner street
or rural local with the jovial mine host serving the perfect
pint and lovely cheese and pickle wedges with crusty bread.
the moon in the water (read your george orwell) ithey're not
but they are quite acceptable and tim wetherspoon can be
praised for the concept and especially sighting many in places
which where something of a desert for decent pubs - one
i quite often drink in is the white lion of mortimet on stroud
green road. it's near kaye's and when it opened (it was one
the very early wetherspoons, in the first 10 or so i think) round
that part of stround green was a desdert for a decernt pub.
there's a few more now but the white lion is still the closest
to kaye's and still not bad.

  guy
