Well this was one of those games when often it is the stayaway fans who get the
best of it, but yesterday I really enjoyed it. A crowd of 10k with almost a
thousand noisy visitors led to a good atmosphere and it was an enjoyable game
to watch. We all wondered at how they would line up when we heard the team. We
had White at left back with Lubo and Naylor at centre back and Hughes at right
back. Gradel and Snoddy were interchangeable on the flanks with BJ and Kilkenny
inside them, and Vokes and Becks up front.
The big questions for me then were going to be - is White up to a recall at LB
? Is Johnson the centre midfielder he thinks he is and is Gradel any use from
the start and worth trying to keep. The answer to all 3 was a hesitant 'yes'.
Gradel ran around a lot, often with the ball, and his pace and directness
caused them problems all night, most evidenced by our first goal (when we began
to think we would not score) when he tied the full back in knots and hit a low
hard cross that the defender deflected into his own net. He drove forward on a
few other occasions hitting the side netting once. Often he does take the wrong
option but he offers us something different and hopefully we will be able to
keep him.
With White on the left and Hughes more comfortable on the right our full backs
offered us a real presence going forward for about the first time. I had
forgotten how quick White was, and he linked up well with those around him, he
did however tire big time towards the end and nearly gave a sloppy goal away
losing possession inside our own half (in the event it gave Casper chance to
show what he is best at - saving at peoples feet) Hughes also got forward and
put in the cross of the night which Vokes headed over.
For me this should be the full back pairing of the rest of the season.
Johnson did OK in the centre - he linked ok with Kilkenny and let him dictate
play from deep. One surging run led to him playing the ball through to Becks
for the 3rd goal.
Our second goal was a lovely one two with Kilkenny and Beckford with Kilkenny
continuing his run and finishing well.
Their goal was the best of the night -a stunning volley from ex LUFC Sweeney
when he latched on to a poor(ish) punch from Casper from a corner.
Snoddy also hit the keeper \ post \ defender and saw it scrambled away.
Vokes - still to impress me- missed two easy free headers at 0 0.
So overall a convincing and comfortable win against a poor side - the one
crappy bit being the last 5 mins when we won a few corners and messed about
with Robinson (who had two efforts from long range just wide) and Gradel
dicking about in the corner to no effect when they should have just put the
corner into the box.
But a good decision to go and watch it.
