when you become an American, you do not actually pledge allegiance to
the US flag, but you do renounce all fidelity and allegiance to all
foreign princes and potentates, which is a big plus for some people,
you also swear to defend the constitution and laws and, God help me,
take up arms in defence of them if necessary.
On a more serious note Adrian, as I think Tim pointed out, as an alien
married to an American the laws treat you like shit in the event of
disaster scenarios as far as kids, inheritance, death etc is concerned
so look into that and be sure you know what you are doing if you don't
become a citizen ( you do not lose being British). Assuming the
emotional / personal choice matter is a wash on either side of the
decision here is my two cents:
pluses
- get to vote
- don't get treated like shit if bad things happen
- easy travel back and forth with 2+ passports
minuses
- will have to pay US taxes in perpetuity no matter where you live
- costs about $500 to get it done
