Thought I would share this with the leedslist after an debate on
www.lufctalk.com about the merits of finishing 2nd.
(I had to go and get my History of Leeds book for this LOL! )
Is finishing 2nd a great achievement for this squad? And indeed, for the club?
Too right! Before Revie, 2nd place could never have been sniffed at!! And even
after Revie... you have to admit that by the end of a long season, 2nd place
(AND promotion) is a worthy achievment by any teams standards....
Just to put this into perspective....I have picked three comparable seasons,
where we finished 2nd to see how they rate:
1927-1928 Season
Leeds finish 2nd in Div.2 Played 42 W 25 D 7 L 10 F 98 A 49
Knocked out of the FA Cup Round 3 (only round they compete in).
Top goalscorers: Jennings and White 21
Only 2 players played every game that season (43 games) Reed and Townsley
1930-1932 Season
Leeds finish 2nd in Div.2 Played 42 W 22 D 10 L 10 Goals For 78 Against 54
Knocked out of the FA Cup Round 3 (only round they compete in).
Top goalscorer: Keetley 23
Only ONE player played every game that season (43 games) Jack Milburn
And how about the great John Charles' team?
1955-1956 season
Leeds finish 2nd in Div.2 Played 42 W 23 D 6 L 16 F 80 A 60
Knocked out of the FA Cup 3rd Round (only round they compete in).
Top Goalscorer: Charles: 29
Just 3 players make 43 appearances: Kerfoot, Wood, and Dunn.
Compare to THIS season:
2009-2010 Season
Leeds finish 2nd in League 1. Played 46 W 25 D 11 L 10 F 77 A 44
Leeds play 60 (!!!) games this season in all comps.
Beat Manu in 3rd Round of FA Cup, take Spurs to replay.
Get to Northern Final of Paint Pot
Almost take Liverpool to replay in Carling Cup
Top goalscorer: Beckford 31 goals in 48 starts
Howson makes 50 starts, Snoddy & Doyle 52
So there you are. And arguably, League 1 is much harder these days than it was
in the 30s 40s & 50s, there are MANY more games for a side competing in all
competitions, and even factoring in the rubbish second half of the season, look
at how few goals we conceded in comparision, and everything else.
So Well done lads. Don't let anyone say finishing second isn't a great
achivement.
