FUEL EXCISE & ALTERNATIVE FUEL RESOURCES FOR TRANSPORT INDUSTRY:

Blockades by truck owner-drivers in Victoria & QLD recently (and rallies by
farmers to Canberra this week) have mirrored similar actions by their
counterparts in Britain. At issue is the Federal Government's fuel excise,
first levied on diesel fuel in 1957 & making up a substantial % of the per
litre cost of fuel in Australia.=20

The government blames increased world oil prices for the steep rise in fuel
prices seen over recent months. But, say truckies, someone has to take
responsibility for the crippling costs which have led many owner-drivers to
the wall. And they are bemused by government appeals to financial
constraint as justification for not freezing or removing the excise, when
it has just announced a record surplus for this past year.

Meanwhile, a number of groups and new initiatives are working around the
country to raise the profile and viability of alternative fuel sources
which would see industry less dependent on world oil prices and making use
of more renewable and 'green' fuel sources.
