I recently completed some rope twist spindles for my deck. I have
about 70 lineal feet of decking rail, and about 150 spindles
thereabouts. Every third is a rope twist...I ain't crazy!!!...er, not
totally crazy.
I didn't want the rope the full length, and so had to use my lathe to
make the clean transition from square 2x2 to round for roughing at the
Legacy and then turning the 3 twist ropes.
Anyway...I simply cut a shallow (1/8") cross slot in one end of the
2x2s, and marked my centers on the opposite end. I use a standard
spur drive similar to this... http://www.amazon.com/DELTA-46-933-Spur-Drive-Lathes/dp/B00004Z03T
This engages the slots very easily and even if rotated to different
position, still centers up. I used this same spur drive on my Legacy
and it worked great...especially after having already established a
dimple at the dead center end.
I'll post when I get some deck railing installed...it's in limbo right
now.

Definitely not selling this one. It takes me too long to make them
manually. I could farm it out but it would still be expensive for two or
three units.
