Hello Brandon
I have been working on a home made Z axis for a few months now. on my own
machine.Mine works well and is very stable, but I am not finished with it as
yet, so I have not posted any pictures to the group.
but I will tell you what Ive done so far.
I used a rack-in-pinon carriage and table assembly for an old Shopsmith as my
lifting and lowering controls,This gives me the control of the plunge depth
that I wanted, 7 1/2". a few tack wields and some square cut nuts, inside the
Steel tubes/ rails of the shopsmith parts allows me to hook up my router and or
any set up that I may need in the future with little problems. Some Rockler
slides and thumb screws to lock the Assembly into place, when in use, gives me a
rock solid and plunge depth lock. As I said this is only a proto type and is
not yet ready for the show and tell time with the group. but it dose work and
so far Im pretty happy with the results.
More to come on this project latter.

Has anyone attempted to build a shop made z-axis? I would love to get your
thoughts or see your design. I have been working on a design that is based off
of Matthias Wandel's router lift design, only inverted. My main concern is
increasing plunge depth while maintaining stability. I also cannot decide if I
want to incorporate tilting capabilities.

Thanks,
Brandon
