Bingo! That is what I did. I told them I could duplicate it with all the hand carving, for twice as much as I could make two matching posts that would look so close to the original, it would look like a match to any others in the set. They chose the matching pair. I showed them the little details that would be missing. They didn't realize they were there, LOL.
Now the next thing to figure out is how much?

Offer a new matching pair of their design using your guidance. Then both will be happy. (unless that design matches other period furnishings in the same room)

This was broken in a move and the movers lost or hid it, so fixing the old one, that would be too easy. Either way, the wood is walnut and will be replaced with walnut. The posts have a hole 2/3 the way up for a pivoting mirror swivel bolt to pass through. The ball is 2-3/4", over all it is 24 inches. The first challenge is always the customer. What options should we give them?

    Hello Mike
You don't get the easy ones do you.
What is this spindle for? ( it is pretty) but if one broke
already, what kind of wood are you going to use? Walnut, popular
What is the over-all size and dia. of this spindle ? I cant tell
if its very small or large from these pictures. (Im going to
guess its 2 or 3 feet tall and 4-5"in dia. at the top and bottom.)
I think that I would try to make this spindle in two pieces, the
lower 2/3 could be done on the Legacy, the upper part the ball and
leaf projection could be done on both the Legacy and lathe,.THE
leaf projection is the one that is stumping me, roughing it out on
the lathe and then finishing it by hand is most likely the way it
was done. but I dont have that skill, (I know you do,) but the
time it takes to Finnish be hand would be very slow.
Another factor that needs to be asked is How many do you need to make?
This is a GREAT Topic and Project for the group. I cant wait to
hear not only how you are going to do this, but what others think
of this one. and how they would do it. ;-)

One more idea that I just thought of, since you already stated
that one spindle got broken, are you going to make this spindle
from scratch? or could you just re-make the broken part and re-use
    the old upper part? ;-)
    Have a good day.
