Subject: Re: legacy "performance" cnc upgrade...questions

just got off the phone with legacy...very nice and informative
conversation...here are some "fun" facts...big difference between the rack and
pinion set up and having the steppers connected directly to the lead
screws...if the steppers are connected directly to the X axis lead screw, for
example, and you did a somewhat lengthy cut (e.g. 8 ft.), the time to come back
to your starting point is considerable...so i might(maybe!,possibly!,will
consider it!, etc.) look into setting up the racks and pinions as a custom
mod...what is a bit frustrating, is the fact that the original purchaser of the
1800, purchased the cnc upgrade package($7,500, back in 2008) when they
purchased the machine, but opted out of the rack and pinion option( UHHHHHHH!),
which saved about $450...so thus the reason i do not have any racks and
pinions...ok, so if i do want to go to R and P's, i'll have to dive into the
MCM book...but i also found out that the stepper motor brackets were different
as well...which means more mod work...so i might just set things up as
originally intended, direct drives on all the lead screws(and a stepper on the
headstock) and see how well i can adapt to the cnc world...then there is the
overall cost factor(buying the machine, increasing mcmaster carr's
profits(LOL),labor, etc.,etc.) as compared to just buying a new machine from
legacy...but then i would be depriving mac the opportunity of critiquing my
work, LOL!...well. stay tuned as this saga comes to the big
screen!...thanks...joe
