HI Richard Im not trying to speak for Mike. but on my SS duplicator I find it very easy to use, basically where the point of the follower touches, the cutter also touches. keeping 90 deg. to the work is not hard, but also not fully necessary either , What I like about the SS is that I can work with the grain of the wood, and attack it as certain angels where a line cutter could not get into. Im not trying to put one machine over the other, but For me the SS is my favorite duplicator to use, (I have tried Vaga type of clones, but not the Vaga its self.) but having said that, there is one duplicator that I also like. (even thought I have not used it yet.) IT is the Veil ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbgpwrhlrTI ) duplicator. I own the grinder and cutter, but not the line/linear rails that make up the duplicator. But you can believe me that this cutter head is really slick. It works well with my home made grinder/legacy attachment. (but that is an entirely a different topic.) ;-) talk to you all latter. C.A.G.

Mike I still can't see how I would keep the cutter at right angles to the pattern, after all the unit seems to be free of any backstop,un- like the homemade one in the Videos I will have to see if there is one near me to have a look at. You are able to not only get to the 90º but way past as well. I have even made captured rings with the Shop Smith. This ability to duplicate way beyond the "downhill" is why I don't own a Vega. Richard, you should be able to make one yourself. As long as you have the cutter and the follower perpendicular to each other, it will be like cutting a key. If there is a 90º in the original or in the pattern, it will be there as well in the finish product. This will be especially needed on your 1/4" dowel shoulder. Here is a video of adapting the SM Dup to another lathe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSYJ0eq1sSg Enjoy. If that is the case I am sure I can make a similar copier to go on my Record lathe..
