Thanks Mike, and Happy and Health to you as well.

My wood working business is pretty much focused on stair parts as well as antique repair parts and furniture makers needs. All my customer base and projects that come from them are a sold item before I start. Consequently I don't get much play time or bowl turning time. I've turned door knobs for Barbie doll houses out of Cocobolo, all the way up to 28" diameter 18 foot column. I also make curved molding in my shop but no cabinets. I don't do anything straight or square. LOL Everything has to be at least a little twisted, like me. The antique business is the most fun because it forces you to figure out how the old masters had done it in the past. But the key here is, I built my business on orders and not an inventory. Find your biggest customers, others businesses. Make them your customers and not your competitors. With the legacy capabilities, they need you, they just may not know it yet. Also no show room and no craft fairs. I am sure that when I slow down, I will do some museum turnings but if one of them sell, it will be a whopping price and will be just supplement money. I'm no where near that stage of my life though. Well enough rambling, let's go make some saw dust.

My hat is off to anyone who can comfortably make a living woodturning, I’ve been woodworking and woodturning for 6 decades and at best the income derived barely offsets my material and tool expenses but then again no price can be placed on the self gratification and worldwide camaraderie associated with it such as from this group.

Happy and Healthy New Year everyone, from the cold and snowy Adirondack Mountains !

Yes I have, and I started with the Vega. I am very comfortable with one (because I can rub my belly and pat my head) but where the Vega cutter stops, and leaves some of the fine detail to be cut in, the Shopsmith Duplicator will clean it up from the first set-up and will only require sand paper and not another tool. If you are re-creating a spindle and it has to be the same, you will have to clean up inner corners. If you are designing, as was mentioned before, allow for the downhill in the pattern and no-one will be the wiser because they will all be the same. It's not a bold statement, It's how I make my living. It's what works for me.

That is the beauty of the Shop Smith duplicator. You are able to
not only get to the 90º but way past as well. I have even made
captured rings with the Shop Smith. This ability to duplicate way
beyond the "downhill" is why I don't own a Vega.

Richard, you should be able to make one yourself. As long as you
have the cutter and the follower perpendicular to each other, it
will be like cutting a key. If there is a 90º in the original or
in the pattern, it will be there as well in the finish product. This will be especially needed on your 1/4" dowel shoulder. Here
is a video of adapting the SM Dup to another lathe

Richard, I use a Vega Duplicator for such tasks, can’t imagine
any turner not having one, just make sure all of your cuts are

The Shopsmith duplicator looks a good idea ------but and a
big BUT how do you keep the hand held unit at 90 deg to the
work and also the pattern,, Is it the case of keeping it
square by eye. If that is the case I am sure I can make a
similar copier to go on my Record lathe..

Tried on my Record lathe and could not get two the same, I did
