I think it really depends on the size of your machine larger machines need larger morse tapers to handle heaver operations your machine will do.the larger the morse taper the more surface area it has to drive whatever you put in it
But in a medium size lathe or the legacy mill i like a number 2 morse which is as large as you can go and still have your 1inch by 8 threads for your chucks and stuff. You can always use sleeves to make a smaller morse tool fit but not the other way round Just my opinion based on years of working in the metal working industry Bill From: legacy-ornamental-mills@googlegroups.com [mailto:legacy-ornamental-mills@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of MWF Sent: Sunday, 5 November 2017 12:53 PM To: legacy-ornamental-mills@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Need LOM dogs and split nut OK guys - its been kinda "slow" on the LOM discussions lately - so here goes: I'll toss this one out for discussion: How does one determine if the headstock on their lathe (LOM or other brand) is a #1, #2, or a #3 Morse Taper? (Short of having a "known taper" piece of stock and seeing if it "fits" into your headstock.) If given a choice of which taper to have on your device (lathe?) - which will you recommend - and WHY? Thanks. Does the headstock have a threaded head for adding a 4 jaw chuck? I rarely use my LOM dogs anymore since adding one to my LOM. Does it have the #1 morse taper headstock?
