ACME Threaded Rod for LOMs - 5/8-4

A BIG THANK YOU, Joe for the VERY useful link.

I called them and talked with a very helpful lady - Annette.
They sell the 5/8-4 Acme threaded rod in 6' and 12' lengths.

The 6 footers are shippable via UPS; the 12 footers - Not.  12 footers will have to via motor carrier.

I asked her - since they don't have 8 foot rods, if we needed one, would they cut a 12 foot one to 8 foot and ship us both pieces (8' & the ~4' cutoff).
She said "Yes, But:"  The packaging will add to length - so the rod would have to be cut a bit less than 8' to keep it under the 8 foot max for UPS.

They also have/sell nuts in the same thread count/pitch - in steel, Delrin, and brass.  My thinking is you could order some in Delrin and or brass, cut them in half, then embed the two pieces in material that forms that "clamping" device.  If you did this using the brass nut, you'd possibly never have the "wearing out" problem again.

Annette is sending me more info that I will share via this Subject line in a day or two.

58-8 is not what Legacy used. but is easy to find on the market.  
The tap and or even an already made drive nut can be bought on line. Legacy WILL NOT have a match for you on that, they used 5/8-4 acme screw on all the Legacy's.

But on the good side of things, I have been playing around with the idea for years. 
By using a 5/8-8 acme screw would slow down you pitches of your gears by half,  If you use a motor drive your standard gear set would be able to give you a pretty nice finish. (More cuts per inch  is exactly what you need to get a better finish on you parts you make.
since you have the lower part, just copy it,, plastic's are easy to cut , I don't think is would be to hard to make...

I wish you luck on this project, I Honestly do not think it will be hard to do, and will offer you some very real advantages for you mill, that others do not have. (that is with out buying a .5 gear set.)

Bill - I build lots of things and have no problem building the split nut but must have stopped looking for was to do it.  I did not know until you mentioned about the tap on ebay. Thanks!

Tim- I am not opposed to shipping but I feel it would be cost prohibitive because of its size (broken down of course it is still bulky).  Local would be preferred but not the only thing possible.
As for price I have no clue.  I was advertising it in the local craigslist for $800 with very little action.  I thought about fixing it so it was completely operational but have too many hobbies at the moment (although Bill turning me on to the acme taps, hummmm....). I live in Pasadena CA just outside of LA where wood working is not a common hobby.  I found this little corner of the web to help with the right price and it looks like this may be the right place to sell it.  I am open to suggestions
