Curt,
I will check them out, thanks much. I have VCarve on this end also. More to follow.

Good morning Eric.
I have been playing around with plastic gearing for the Legacy. But I have been looking at the other end of the gear linkage. The drive gears are much smaller tooth design, I see no real reason why they too can not be made out of plastic's? In the past, we have had a few people cut out gears for the group on a laser, out of metal. (but sadly these people no longer have access to the equipment, do this any more.) I have DFX files for the gears that I have been making to match up with Legacy's indexing gears, If you like I can forward those to you, or If you like I can do some more trial and error and see if I can make these drive gear first, To see how they work. Its up to you. I am in the process of making a new attachment for the Legacy, I am cutting out gears out of Plexiglas and Acrylic for this attachment. So it really isn't that big of a deal for my to add a 1/4" square in the middle of the gear, For me the biggest factor is trying to find the correct size of gear to make the pitches you need. I use V carve for my programing and then make CRV file into DFX for cutting on the laser. Here are two files to see if you can do something with them. If they work for you, I have no problems sending them to the group.
Have a good day.

Good Morning,
I not sure if I should start a new message or add on to this. I think I am almost done putting my 900 together with a Z-axis carriage. My machine only came with drive gears F &G, is this something I need to start working on now or can it wait. I think I can make them once I understand how they work, I have no background in this sort of thing. What I do have is a is a laser engraver-cutter, 3D printer, and a CNC that can mill aluminum. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I came across some HDPE for a very reasonable price. I was hoping to try it for gears but it would be CNC cut instead of laser.
We will see how it goes.

Tim I was told that the name Derlin was a DuPont trade name. and this Acetron was the same stuff but made by another name only. If you feel the Derlin on my split nut, it feels the same as the Acetron, If I get a chance I will also use the UHMW. It is easer for me to find, (but I have not priced it $$$ wise in many years.)
More latter.

Looks like a lot of properties similar to Delrin Curt. I still think we should try UHMW too, though I want to get some of that stock you have there. Kind Regards,

Hello Everyone, And Good morning to all. ;-)
Mac. Yes the new gears are a heavy 1/4" the old ones were 3/16.
Jeff. I'm not really sure why they broke? I think it could be the plastic and metal meshing, but it also could have been the cold temps in my shop? Due this Question, I made the second gear to try to find out for sure why? A third possibility could be, the my mounting of the motor and gear set-up, Perhaps the gears were not set correctly due my my brackets having to much play in it??? ALL That I can say for sure is, What I have now, And that I have a lot more testing to do. PVC is very hard, and it looks to me at this time the hardness also made it a little brittle. I am hoping that this Acrtron GP plastic will hold up? Bye the way. This is what I found out about this product.
Have a good day everyone.

Thanks for the update Curt.
Was the tooth failure between the two pvc gears or between a steel and pvc gear?

Hello Everyone.
Sadly the PVC gears that I made last week, started to chip and break. as I was using my machine last night.
So this morning, I was able to find a different type of plastic, and I was able to make a new set of Gears that should hold up to the Legacy. The material is called Acetron GP. (Its not cheap to buy, but I was told that it should hold up for my gears that I am making. And it is Laser friendly, So I bought some today.) Here are some photos. Tomorrow I will do some more testing, with both Acetron gears as well as with my Original Legacy gear that I used for my specks.
Please let me know what you think? talk to you all more latter.

they might be stackable????? lol. Kind Regards,

Tim maybe you could go to a pulley system and hang one or more from the ceiling. Lol Denson Sent from Denson's iPhone That’s one way to do it.
I don’t know that I could bring myself to discard the rest. I would feel obligated to find it a new home. (Probably mine, lol)
Jeff from Connecticut Sent from my iPhone The thing is $900 or even $1500 if you could get a big mill with it on just have parts shipped to you and have the owner scrap the rest A drive motor and controllers were worth $889 plus the 4X gears plus what ever else extras come with the big mill you still would be in front Bill I have been keeping my eyes out. Even though they were an option, the previous owner (if they had them) doesn’t typically want to sell them separately. (Can’t blame them really) Those machines aren’t the ones that break down for shipment very well at 1200 or so pounds. Harder to hide in the corner of the garage too. Lol Jeff from Connecticut Every now and again they come up for sale on one of the really large mills if you could get one at a good price you would have a set And of course have a column making mill too lol Bill Good information and thanks for posting it Bill. Just don;t seem to be any interest in actually getting a X 4 gear set. really to bad. I want it just because its available. Not sure I would use it more then to play but...
Kind Regards, Ziegler WoodWork & Specialty Legacy sold the set back in the day for $480.00 if they still made them today it would be double that I bet. I got mine from roger phebe the legsacy international sales person back then he retired but before he left he did a deal with me for lots of Legacy parts including enough parts to make up a 4x set and my revo mill, I’m not sure roger is with us anymore I have not heard from him in a very long time he use to post here on the group al the time. I found a way around the 4x set before I owned them by using a sprockets and chain I mounted another spindle below the main one And connecting them with a 2 to 1 or 3 or 4 to one sprockets then when you used the 4X gears on your mill it turned them into 8x and more on the lower spindle I don’t have better pics sorry I took these pics years ago and it was part of a side milling mod I made for milling lager dia and longer work than the mill was made to do and template following on the same large work . it was a way of making large columns and putting round holes and dowls in the ends I could make however many needed to make one big lone columns. The mod is here https://ornamentalmills.com/Bill_Bulkeley/side_cutting_mod.html The 4x gears are mainly used on very large dia projects but not always if you’re a crazy legacy nut like me lol Bill My Lord!!! That is a complicated set of gears. It would have to come with a manual just to know how to use it/them. I assume Legacy sold this gear set? This is the only time I have seen them. Do you know what these sold for new? How did you come by them?
