location names
Your geo database idea may be fine for those Americans who
use it but for the rest of the world it is a non-starter. Personally, I would
be quite happy if it suddenly disappeared.

with location names
The second thing that is needed to clean up locations is an
option to check
all locations versus the geo database and automatically
set a "matched with
geo database" flag. This flag is not the same
as the manually set verified
flag. It would only be set by the
compare locations with geo database
process. Subsequent tests
could check all locations again or just those
without the flag
set. Then the user could search for locations that are not
matched. Non-matches could be caused by a number of reasons which
the user
could address but all the locations that do match would
probably not need
further verification. This implies that the geo
database will have
meaningful and regular updates to make it more
useful. One thing that is
especially needed in the geo database
and the Legacy program is the ability
to make all locations either time
sensitive or current. This should be done
by an option that can be
customized by the user. Once each location has its
true longitude
and latitude set it should not be difficult to switch between
them. This would simplify the problems with the County Verifier
complaining
about date correctness and not being able to search the time
sensitive
location name in the geo database. In other words, only
one consolidated
master geo database would be needed instead of the two
that are involved now
and that one would have the ability to do
time-sensitive lookups, etc. This
capability would apply to all
locations and not just USA. I know this is a
big chunk to bite off
but it needs to be done and it will require some
serious table and
programming modifications. It can be done in steps with
the first
two as outlined above to have a separate master list of location
modifiers (prepositions) and also a "matched with geo database" flag
with
accompanying programs to compare and set such
flag.
