I hate to correct you, but Strathclyde Region now longer exists.

Some of the functions are still in existence, e.g. Strathclyde Passenger
Transport Executive, but were now into East, North and South Ayrshire as
separate units.

In a typical British manner there is no standard way. In the case of Argyll 
both are correct, personally I use the latter, as I would with Gloucester. 
BTW Argyllshire no longer exists and since 1975 has been split between the 
Highland and Strathclyde Regions. Note that some counties such as Cornwall, 
County Durham, Norfolk, Essex etc never have "shire" at the end.
