There's the odd Irish exception to the County as well - e.g. County Down. As a matter of interest, someone was asking about the ...sex counties. We have Essex (East Saxons), Middlesex, Sussex, Wessex but no Norsex; the reason was that the Danes were in the north, and so the Saxons weren't. We're talking now about 1000 A.D. Incidentally since Alfred's time there hasn't been a Wessex, until Thomas Hardy revived the concept in literature. Now we have a Countess of Wessex (Sophie) but there's no territory attached.
