Hi Martha,

You don't want to make a new file on the laptop - you'd then have to import your old Legacy file and that potentially would change RINs, MRINs and would change create dates etc.

You want to copy the files from the CD to the right folders on the laptop (if they are a copy of your Legacy data files) - you use My Computer or Windows Explorer to do this.

If you have Legacy backup of your Legacy data file on your CD, you can use Legacy to restore that file.
File > Restore backup
That is the simplest way but you still have to handle multimedia files separately - even if you've used the Legacy backup multimedia.

You certainly don't use a GEDCOM to go from Legacy file to Legacy file - with one exception - you somtimes have to use a GEDCOM if you are going back to an earlier version of Legacy.

I have a new laptop and want to move my files from my old desktop to the laptop. I'm not well versed in computers and know enough to get myself into trouble. I've read the book and looked at the help files and still must be doing something wrong.

I made a back up cd of my files on the desktop and understood that I could use it to load into the laptop but can't get it to work. I made a new file with the same name on the laptop.

I thought of making a GEDCOM file and looked at the instructions but when I get to the last step it says I will be prompted for a file name (I think I know what that is) but have no idea what the location is.

If someone could give me step by step simple directions I would be most grateful, as I said I'm not too up on computers. I really enjoy the Legacy program.
