One more two cents on this topic:

I have found that fairly often I get conflicting information - birthdates
that are one day or one year apart, spelling of names that are close but
don't match exactly, etc - and can't call one any more authoritative than
the other, such as two family trees done by different members of the family.

When I first started doing this, I wasn't careful to source everything, and
then later I would be wondering, "Where did I get that?" So I now record
every source from which I get a piece of information, and in the Detail I
put the information exactly as it came from that source. When I get an
authoritative source, such as the person's own signature in the case of not
knowing exactly how to spell the name, I also record that, and put the
corrected data in the Detail. But I leave the old sources listed with the
information as it came from them, because I have found it helpful later on
to have an "audit trail" of how I got to where I am now.
