That is really not the best way to convert an image from one type to another. While a .bmp and .jpg WILL still open if the file extension is changed, that is not the case with all file types. The biggest problem however is that it is not actualy converting the file. A 2 MB TIFF or BMP that is renamed to JPG is still 2 MB. When *converting* you will also alter the file size, which is what the original poster needed to do. I just did a test and converted a 1.6 MB BMP file to a 368 KB JPG at the 100% setting, and to 42.8 KB at the 50% setting.

You could also do search and replace using a text editor on a GEDcom file. This way you would still have only one picture (now jpg).
