I think U.S. Cities Galore is paramount important piece of software to
have. I am one of its ardent advocates, it is so easy to use. Whenever
possible, they include the latitude and longitude of the location. I
really appreciate it. (And no, I don't receive anything from them to
plug it; I just like that much!) If I had to complain about U.S. Cities
Galore, it is that you can't enter a city alone, and let it find all
locations bearing that name. You have to enter a state and city to get
the county, -OR- you have to enter a state and county to get the city.
But pooh, I usually know two of those, so that is not a problem. You
could download the trial and see what you think of it.
If you are referring to the */Handybook/*, it is very thorough. It is
inclusive of all counties, cites, but everything is sorted by state,
then county. You can get look up who has which type of records, and
where to write for them. I use it everyday- that's why I keep it right
next to me on my desk. They come out with new editions about every 12 or
14 months, but I don't buy one every year. (The information doesn't
change all that fast.) But I will get one every fifth year, I like the
maps. The book is big and heavy. Its really a reference. book.

Hi Robert,
U.S Cities Galore sounds like A must have! I went
to the website and the price is listed for $29.95, for
the Cities Galore 2. That is a very reasonable price
to pay. Is this just an updated version of the
original or is this yet more cities and counties
included? How thorough is this book; is it all
inclusive of cities, counties, etc.?

Well, not to put down Legacy's GEO, keep in mind
there are two other
sources we can use. Unfortunately, we have to buy
them. They are:
U.S. Cities Galore
http://www.uscitiesgalore.com/
and
The Handybook for Genealogists

I can look up locations in US Cities Galore by state
and county, and get
a list of towns, or, I can look up by state and
town, and get a list of
counties. I just love it. While I could do without
it, I don't want to!
The Handybook stays on my desk! I use it all the
time. It has the
following information.
1. Legal records, where to send for them;
recorders office, county
clerk, etc. You don't send to just the clerk
of a given
county/state for records; they all have
specific offices.
2. Where to write for a Census
3. Phone numbers
4. When created from another county, or whether
it was the Original
County
5. Maps - Border Counties of other states
6. Migration Trails
The bad thing about it is it is expensive!
