Ron,

Turns out I misspoke. Going back to the computer I did the editing on, I actually had used Access and not OpenOffice. I did find this information however (http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Connecting_to_Microsoft_Access), and started some testing. If you take the Legacy database .fdb and rename to .mdb you can follow those instructions and link from OO to that database. That *should* allow editing and saving the changes. (the little I did seemed to work fine) When finished, rename back to .fdb. You cannot go from the OpenOffice native file type of .odb and save as an .mdb file.

Hi Gary.

There is an error in my last email in that I should have said "MDB" format and not "DOC".

I know there is no problem in using OOo writer to amend a GEDCOM but I have yet to find a suitable way of using OOo Base to amend an OOo ODS file and then reformat as an MS MDB. Converting to a GEDCOM and changing that in OOo before re-importing may be a way of block changing many files.

My Legacy file was a conversion from a previous PAF file. I used OO to edit
and correct hundreds of notes that did not format properly when a gedcom
was originally imported into PAF. Scrolling down the column in OO was much
easier than having to open each record individually. I did not do any other
manipulation beyond the data in the table itself, I used no macros and I
saved it back with the same extension. No corruption at all. As always, if
you have a good backup you can experiment without risk.

At present I would only consider using Open Office for searching the Legacy database and not for making changes. In fact I am uncertain if one can write amendments back into the DOC format and I know that the macros are different
so it could well corrupt your file should you attempt it.

I am slowly, very slowly, looking into this.

Thanks Ronald and Dennis for your responses, but darn. I do not have
Access. I do have Open Office Database, but I don't believe I've ever
had a need to use it before, so I'm not very comfortable giving it a
whirl right now.

Cathy, I cannot find anything in the Source Detail anywhere. I tried
highlighting various fields to see if there was a secret space
somewhere and I cannot find it. Also thanks for the heads up on the
list. I did know about Gmail, but the lag on messages making it to the
list is frustrating at times.

*le sigh*

Well it could be worse I suppose. At least it's only about 40-50
people. It could be my whole database! :)

I would like to quickly add that it would be nice to see a feature
that might fix this problem... if it's possible of course.
