How long is a piece of string?  As I understand, the time it will last depends 
on the quality of the disc, the more expensive the longer they last, at least 
in theory. Anything from 2 to 10 years. I also believe that Rewritables retain 
data for an even shorter period of time - maybe up to 5 years.

I don't really know about DVDs but I suspect that are not a lot different in 
this respect to CDs. I use a usb stick, an external Hard Drive and also MS 
Spaces (on-line storage)
