A major part of the value of this list is learning how others do things. Although I have been at this for well over a decade, listening to some of you makes me realize how much experience can be gleaned here.

Because I'm doing a descendancy project and looking for living people rather than dead ones, my approach is likely different than most. However, much of what we do has universal application. Just because I do things one way, doesn't mean it's the best way. If I learn not only *how* others do things, but *why* they chose that method, it may help me to smooth my own way. Why else would I be asking about the underlying thought process of sorting sources by type than by location and/or name?

My old software had no sort of any type for sources, but the software did have a find feature, so sorting wasn't necessary. I watched the video on sources, and am trying the approach shown there, not because I necessarily thought it the best, but because I understood the underlying reasons for doing so.

There is no "right" or "wrong" way to name your Master Sources in Legacy. It is an extremely flexible system, where you can develop something to suit yourself.

If you don't want to sort by type - or name or location - then don't do it! Do what feels/seems right to you. It will be fine. :-)

Which brings me back to my original question. What is the underlying thought process that makes LUGers group by type rather than by name or location? And to insert here, I do have my US Census records grouped by type because they truly have no location other than in the source detail attached to each census event, and none apply to any one family but is available to use as a source for all families living at the time. But my original source, "The Thompson and Given Families" is groupd with other sources for "Thompson", rather than as a group which you might call "Book". (And not grouped as Given, nor Stewart, nor Ferguson, nor Pennsylvania, nor Ohio, nor any of the other surnames or locations contained therein.)
