I have to admit, Kris, that I like layout of the older one better. As a splitter that is the format I use for all my sources. The individual information, followed by the larger information. For census records that would be - John B. Smith household. 1900 census, Missouri, Lafayette County, Lexington, ED ___, page. ___.
