Aren't you the guy who wrote a couple hours ago saying you've disintegrated into chaos? ;-)

Sherry, you know, 'our' Sherry at tech support, has 'a thing' about the MRIN system and I do believe I got it from her. She says sometimes MRIN's or RIN's need to be renumbered. I don't know why, you'd have to ask her. It's probably in the archives somewhere.

JL,

I can't think where you got that from, it's certainly new to me, and I would be
very interested to hear an official comment on this.

RIN's and MRIN's are fine unless you have to renumber them for some
reason defined by tech support. I've never had to do such a thing, but
I believe how it works is that if you have the Deluxe version and there
was a problem you'd have a choice between numbering the MRIN's or the
RIN's. One way around if you're concerned is to put the MRIN also into
the User ID field.

File names for such a diverse collection of information is always going to
be a matter of personal preference and the degree of organisation we want to
go to. I only have a couple of hundred images so far but this is growing
rapidly. I generally label them this way, but with more or less information
as is required so that I can easily find any particular file.

Census - downloaded images of original census pages (Ancestry images or
transcriptions and similar), scanned images and, photos of census docs.
File name: [census year date], [place], [head of house name], [original
image file name]

Certificates - scanned images of birth, christening, marriage death, and any
other relevant certificates. File name: [surname, given names], [type of
certificate], [date, or original image file name which includes date]

Monuments - cemetery headstones, monuments with names. File name:
[principal surname (and sometimes given names) on headstone], [oldest date
of death], [cemetery and/or location]

Pictures - photos or scanned images of individuals or groups, scanned
documents not covered elsewhere relating to an individual. File name:
[surname, given names], [approx or actual year date], [identifying note, or
a, b, c where several pictures otherwise similarly labelled]

Places - photos, maps, scanned pictures of places. File mane: [place],
[date], [significance]

Each of the five groups of files is subdivided into my two main family
databases. I like the look of the JGEN system but I've yet to get that
deeply into it. I'd rather not use RIN or MRIN numbers because they are not
permanent, and I haven't used any User ID numbers, but that may be a better
index link. However many of the images are used with more than one
individual or marriage or source.

I would like to see anyone else's system before my collection gets so big
that I'm unwilling to change it all to something better than I have at
present!
