Any application that uses the Microsoft map server may be painflly slow. The "improved" maps at weather.com often take many times longer to load than the older radar maps. There's a lot of detail available in the Microsoft maps, but they try to download too much of it on the initial request for a map.
There is no option to select a simpler map...
