Jenny,

You are correct that clicking Save will apply the option for the future  but to 
change all the surnames that were created using the old option you have to use 
the Apply button to tell Legacy you want it to go into your database and change 
existing records.

If Legacy follows standard Windows conventions - which I am fairly sure
it does - there is not *necessarily* any need to click the Apply button.

The purpose of an Apply button is to apply some change/option/whatever
that you have selected *without exiting that screen*.  Pressing the Save
button will also apply the change/option.whatever but will close the
screen.
