Hi Ila

You can edit a gedcom file in a text editor or word processor, saving it as
ascii text, not a "word" file. This can be usefull to change the tags (find
and replace) so that when importing into a genealogy database the data goes
in the right places. However you can also "map" the data during the import
process;

(from Legacy Help) "Put Unrecognized Items into Notes Field
This option puts any unrecognized information into the Notes of the
individual being read at the time. For example, a line such as "OCCUP
Bricklayer" would be put into the Notes because OCCUP it is not a standard
GEDCOM tag. (You can also re-map unrecognized tags to standard tags before
you start the import.)"

However the comment by Richard was on a slightly different topic - he was
suggesting importing a gedcom as-is into your Legacy genealogy database as a
new file, tidying it up, and then if you are satisfied with it to import the
new Legacy file into your "main" Legacy database (rather than importing a
gedcom straight into your "main" database).

Cheers, Brett
