Thunderbird (3.0), has the ability, when you send a *reply* message, to
file that reply in the folder containing the message that you're
replying to. This is instead of putting it in a Sent folder.

When the mailing list receives your message, it sends a copy of it to
everyone who is subscribed to the mailing list - you see a second copy
because you are subscribed.

With Thunderbird, this only seems to affect replies: not any messages
that begin a new thread. I imagine that something similar might be
happening with Gmail.
