Scott, When shopping for a UPS, there are a couple of things you need to look for.
1. Make sure that the UPS filters the electrical input and stabilizes it at a steady level. Electrical dips and spikes (brown outs and surges) can cause the same problems that a power outage can cause. This will eliminate those electrical dips and spikes. 2. Make sure that the UPS batteries can be replaced. Although the batteries last a long time, it is much cheaper to replace the batteries when needed, than the entire UPS Unit. 3. Make sure the UPS contains surge protection. Also consider the amount of uptime the UPS will last when under full load i.e., will it give you enough time to backup essential files and safely exit programs, and shut down your computer? 4. Brands are really a personal choice, however, I have always received the best and most reliable service from the APS PowerChute. Others have worked well, however, none could compare with the APS. 5. Make sure that the UPS also contains surge protection. This will stop any electrical surges from storms, lightning, etc from getting into your computer. As Mike Fry stated in his email, it is a good practice to protect every line coming into your computer with a good separate Surge Protector, phone lines, cables, power cords, etc. 6. As a general rule, electricity will seek the shortest path to ground. Rest assured that if there is an unprotected line going into your computer, and lightning strikes close by, or energizes the ground around your home, it will find its way into your computer and can total destroy it. Hope this helps a little, Charles -----Original Message----- From: Scott Hall [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, May 07, 2010 9:29 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Power outage now errors and other issues As a rule I backup everytime I exit Legacy, and am glad the program prompts you to. I'm also happy about the File Repair feature, which along with the instructions on the specific error, solved the issue. I remain a little puzzled why some settings (such as the headers in the Index View) reverted to their defaults after the power outage, but these are minor compared to the potential of a corrupted database. Fortunately, that turned out to not be the case for me. The battery idea is a good one ... I may look into that.
