Or you could just add a note in the text/comments box of the source in which the alternate spelling was found. That wouldn't show up in an index, but then I have never used the index to point me to possible spellings when I am searching for someone. I have one family where I have seen the surname spelled at least a dozen different ways, depending on who was writing / transcribing the record. I show alternate names in the Index, so that married women show with their maiden name and their married name, but I wouldn't want a dozen entries (which wouldn't necessarily be listed together - CULLEENY was spelled KULLING in a record I found just today) for a single person.
