Ah, if only I could go back over every frustrating step...I might be
able to work out my big error.

Alas, it's not possible. So an old backup and lots of hard work are
ahead of me.

I've being trying "Piniform Recuva" software to 'undelete' for the last
2 days, but no good so far.
