I'm sure many, if not most of us, will have imported a GEDCOM and regretted
not "making it clean" before entering it into our master Legacy file. I
decided to compile a set of notes/instructions to ensure that all my future
downloads were "cleansed" in a full fashion. Here is a copy of my
notes/instructions sheet, and hope it is of some help.

I would welcome any feedback, criticism and suggestions to improve it.

Importing Instructions

Tasks to carry out before importing files into Master Legacy file

Create a new file with meaningful name e.g. "Donor file" and import GEDCOM
into it.

*                   Remove Media Files (6. Locations 6.2)

*                   Remove superfluous Notes

* Enter Birth Dates (where missing - If the date is not
known I enter a "circa" date that should fall within 20 years, or an "about"
date that will fall within 5 years)

* Correct Place Names (also check for rogue entries e.g.
occupation, Servant)

* Remove Unknown parents (unless there are Siblings)

* Add Spouses to Husbands/Wives that are Unknown

* Correct any children with 2 or more sets of Parents

* Remove any "Unknown" marriages (this is most easily done
using the marriage list)

*                   Run Duplicate Search

*                   Run Potential Problems

*                   Carry out File Maintenance

*                   Make final corrections

* Carry out Final File Maintenance

* Run "Compare Two Files" & Tag Dups ("1" on Donor File &
"2" on Receiving File) If these tag numbers are in use, replace with
available numbers e.g. 8 & 9.

* Export file to Master File

* Do Manual Merge using Tagged "2" files on Left

Delete the Donor File
