One of the problems with dealing with British parish records is that there is
no single collection on line, other than those being loaded by FamilySearch,
who copied the original paper records.

In addition, the paper records for the church were, and may still be, stored
within the church, and a summary copy was created each year, from the 1700s?,
for the appropriate bishop.

Looking at the online sources :

1. Ancestry has a copy of the London parishes, which would probably cover
Staines/Shepperton/Lambeth (my family came from Hayes which is about 5 miles
North of Shepperton), and is gradually including other parish records,
including Surrey and Kent. These generally are indexed and may link to copies
of the original paper. I think that, if you access the database the correct way
you can get to images of the older records.

2. FindMyPast has a collection of parish records. These are extracted
from the originals (I looked for great-great-grandfather) but it does have
images for some of them.

3. TheGenealogist again has a collection of parish records, which seem to
be extracted from the original paper at some point in the past. I think that
they also sell the data on CD.

Otherwise, you are generally looking at either websites being created
personally, like the Norfolk parishes, or through family history or county
record sites, or the parish clerks site.

That covers England and Wales in general. Scotland has its own website and a
lot of Ireland is now appearing in Ancestry.

I tend to have access to all of them, and more, since my family spread across
Canada, USA and Australia, and my wife’s family originated in Holland and
passed through Germany and France.

Regards

Chris

Thank you so much for the links - already having fun exploring the parish
clerks website. I do have (just got it) the book "The Parish Clerk" - very
interesting seeing it all fitting together.

I didn't say exactly anyone or place. But they were in Middlesex (Staines and
Shepperton), northern Surry (Lambeth and that whole area just south of the
Thames) and Debtford/Lewisham. At least that I have identified so far.

They aren't all "manned" but most have some good transcriptions and
there is the Forest of Dean site which is mostly Glos but gets some
Wilts included you have to register but it is free and has so many
transcriptions!
